Extremadura: Spain’s last unspoilt region

There is a secret destination in Spain; a wild, unspoilt wonderland, sandwiched between Portugal and the central plains of La Mancha, with open agricultural landscapes, old historic settlements, national parks, Roman ruins, vultures and long, empty roads. Patagonia comes to mind, Siberia and even the natural beauty of Montana. Here in the Extremadura you will be getting off the beaten track and away from the costas. In southern Spain, 125km from Cadiz, on the plain of the River Guadalquivir, lies Seville, the capital of Andalusia. N ot only is Seville drenched in sunshine, charm, beauty, culture, architecture, Flamenco, festivals, muesums, churches, cathedrals and bull fighting, it is also credited as being the birth place of tapas with thousands of tapas bars to get your mouth-watering. An exuberant atmosphere pervades the city’s sights and sounds, and not only at fiesta time. If you want to make every day a fiesta, travel to Seville. Postcards from Seviile. Photo © theitchmag.com From the Romans to the Moors, Seville has witnessed a lot over the years and today it is a dream destination. There is so much to see and do. Be amazed by Spain’s Square (Plaza de España), and Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world. Here you will find the tomb of Cristóbal Cólon (Christopher Columbus – although, some say, he didn’t want to be buried in Spain at all and is six feet under in the Dominican Republic). Who knows, but it is great to absorb yourself in the atmosphere, and imagine Columbus and the Spanish conquistadors setting off out of Seville port in search of the New World some 510 years ago. In Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, why not enjoy a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride through the city, or take a stroll around the historical area, stopping off for a drink at the many street cafés before visiting La Giralda, a fine example of Moorish architecture; watch a colourful Flamenco show and (if you really want to) experience a bullfight before it’s thankfully banned. In summer, dress up and go to Isla Cartuja and find out why the Spanish night doesn’t stop before 7AM. The nightlife of Seville is fantastic; no other European city has so many bars per inhabitant than Seville.
